On January 23, 2026, we brought Marty into GRRAND’s care after he was spotted wandering a rural Kentucky community with a visibly severe wound. Neighbors had seen him struggling in recent days and feared the worst. When he arrived, their fears were confirmed — Marty was in critical condition.
Marty is a young-to-middle-aged male golden mix who had been suffering from a large, fist‑sized open wound on his left side. Though weak and lethargic, he stayed conscious during transport and was rushed straight to the veterinarian. He was immediately started on IV fluids, antibiotics, anti‑inflammatory medications, pain management, and intensive wound care.
Further examination revealed something no animal should ever endure: shrapnel embedded deep within the wound. X‑rays confirmed Marty had been shot. The bullet entered through his rear and exited through his back, leaving behind a large, infected hole that required urgent, ongoing treatment.
Marty has now been hospitalized for about a week, receiving daily care from a dedicated veterinary team. He remains extremely fragile, but he is fighting.
A Glimmer of Hope
On January 28, Marty ate his first meal — a small but meaningful victory. Staff even brought him into the workroom for a change of scenery, where he gently leaned into their hands and offered soft tail wags. Even in pain, Marty shows us who he is: tender, trusting, and so deserving of love.
